Description
The Custom 5 didn’t come out of Seymour Duncan’s R&D lab in the usual way — it was born from Seymour Duncan’s own web forum, where users started swapping the ceramic or Alnico 2 magnet in an SH-5 Custom or SH-11 Custom Custom for an Alnico 5. The result stuck around long enough to become its own model.
Think of it as a hot-rodded ’59: same expanded output and deeper low end that made the Custom series famous, but with the edge sanded off. Distortion is less aggressive than the SH-5 or SH-11, replaced by a more vintage-leaning voice that’s still got plenty of push behind it. Back off the gain and you get clean tones that are full-bodied with a noticeable lift in presence — not thin or brittle, even at lower volumes.
Built for the bridge position, the SH-14 is a favorite pairing partner for a ’59 model humbucker in the neck, giving you a classic P.A.F.-style two-pickup setup with a bit more headroom on tap in the bridge when the mix calls for it. Works well across pop, country, blues, classic rock, and heavier rock tones where you want output without losing touch dynamics.
- Alnico 5 magnet for a more vintage-voiced, less compressed output than the SH-5/SH-11
- Four-conductor hookup cable included for full flexibility in coil-splitting and wiring options
- Recommended for bridge position
