Description
The SH-14 Custom 5 grew straight out of Seymour Duncan’s own user community, where players started swapping the ceramic magnet from an SH-5 Custom (or the Alnico 2 in an SH-11 Custom Custom) for an Alnico 5 slug. The result kept the Custom line’s punch and output intact but pulled the voicing toward something more vintage and touch-sensitive, with noticeably less compression on the way in.
Think of it as a hotter, meaner cousin of the ’59 Model — same historical DNA, but with a deeper low end and more headroom before things break up. It tracks pick attack well and cleans up nicely when you back off the volume knob, staying rich and articulate rather than mushy.
Where it shines:
- Bridge position (its designed home)
- Pop, country, and blues players who still want authority on tap
- Classic rock and heavier rock tones without losing note definition
- Pairing with a ’59 Model in the neck for a convincing vintage PAF-style set
Compared to its ceramic and Alnico 2 siblings, expect a warmer, less aggressive breakup with plenty of push left in reserve — strong, but not shouting. It ships wired with four-conductor cable, so you’ve got the flexibility to run split-coil or series/parallel wiring if your setup allows.
Finish: Gold cover.
