Description
The Custom 5 started life as a forum favorite: players in Seymour Duncan’s own user group kept pulling the ceramic or Alnico 2 magnet out of an SH-5 Custom or SH-11 Custom and dropping in an Alnico 5 instead. The result stuck around as an official model because it nails a sound a lot of guitarists were chasing—higher output than a stock ’59, but with a rounder, deeper low end and more push on top.
Think of it as the ’59’s harder-hitting cousin. You still get that vintage-leaning character and touch sensitivity, but with extra headroom before things break up, and a fuller bottom that fills out heavier riffs without turning to mud. Compared to its ceramic-magnet siblings (the SH-5 and SH-11), this one backs off the compression and grit slightly, trading some aggression for a more open, dynamic feel—clean tones especially come through rich, present, and full-bodied rather than thin or brittle.
It’s built for the bridge slot and handles everything from twangy pop and country to blues, classic rock, and heavier rock riffing with equal confidence. A popular pairing is Custom 5 in the bridge with a ’59 in the neck, giving you that classic vintage P.A.F.-style voicing across both pickups without sacrificing the extra output you get down at the bridge.
