Description
The SH-15 Alternative 8 was Seymour Duncan’s first production pickup to pair hot-wound coils with an Alnico 8 magnet, and it shows in how the output behaves. Instead of the compressed, slightly hazy top end you get from many ceramic high-output humbuckers, this one keeps things dynamic — big and punchy through the mids, with upper-mid presence that stays clear rather than sizzly or dark, even when you’re pushing a cranked high-gain amp.
- Alnico 8 bar magnet for a stronger, more aggressive pull than standard Alnico
- Hot-wound coils built for maximum output
- D.C. resistance: 17.68
- Zebra bobbin finish
This is a bridge pickup through and through — Seymour Duncan designed it to anchor rock and metal rhythm tones without turning muddy or brittle. Pair it with a calmer neck pickup like the SH-1n ’59 or SH-2n Jazz Model and you get a set with real contrast: chunky low end and cutting mids up front, smoother warmth in the neck.
It’s a strong match for guitars already leaning warm or balanced tonally, and it tends to shine in instruments with rosewood fingerboards, where the extra bite from the Alnico 8 fills in rather than overwhelms. If your current bridge pickup feels either too polite for high-gain work or too harsh and one-dimensional when maxed out, the Alternative 8 is built to solve exactly that problem.
