Before he became a household name in pickup design, Seymour Duncan was rewinding PAFs for London players in the late ’60s — and one of those pickups ended up in a Les Paul that helped invent hard rock as we know it. The Whole Lotta Humbucker is Duncan’s tribute to that exact recipe, and this listing gets you the neck unit under a nickel cover.
Built around rough cast Alnico 5 bar magnets and plain enamel wire with Seymour’s own winding specs, the neck measures in at 8.20k DC resistance — beefier than a typical vintage PAF, but still balanced against its 8.78k bridge counterpart. The rough cast magnets bring a woody warmth and clarity to every note, while the overall output nudges your amp into a light, natural compression that adds sustain without turning to mush. It’s the sound of a Les Paul cranked through a stack, distilled into a pickup.
Wired with 4-conductor cable, this neck pickup is ready for coil-splitting, phase-switching, or series/parallel wiring via push/pull pots or mini-switches — so you’re not locked into one voice. Pair it with the matching SH-18 bridge for the authentic set, or run it opposite an Alnico 2 pickup like the Pearly Gates for a different, more nuanced in-between tone.
It plays especially well in mahogany-bodied guitars with rosewood boards, where the warmth of the wood and the pickup reinforce each other for that classic, thick low-mid growl.
