Description
Some pickups chase a vibe. This one has actual history: Seymour Duncan hand-rewound a set of PAFs for a young London guitarist whose band went on to rewrite rock history through a wall of Marshall amps. The Whole Lotta Humbucker set is that formula, built the same way it was back then.
Each pickup uses rough cast Alnico 5 bar magnets and plain enamel wire, wound to Seymour’s own pattern. The bridge sits at a hot-for-vintage 8.78k DC resistance, with the neck close behind at 8.20k. The rough cast magnets are the secret to the feel here — they give a warm, evenly balanced note-to-note clarity that makes chords sound huge without turning to mush. Push the amp harder and you’ll notice a subtle, natural compression creeping into your sustain, exactly the kind of touch-sensitive response that made this sound famous in the first place.
Run the matched set for the true original tone, or pair the bridge with an Alnico 2 neck pickup, such as a Pearly Gates, if you want a different flavor in the in-between switch position. Every pickup ships with 4-conductor wiring, so coil-splitting or phase tricks via push/pull pots and mini-switches are all on the table.
These humbuckers do their best work in mahogany or other warm-toned bodies with a rosewood board — think classic Les Paul territory — where that woody midrange meets the pickup’s natural push.
