Description
Seymour Duncan built this combo for players who want two distinct personalities that still shake hands tonally. The SH-2N Jazz Model sits in the neck, delivering a moderate-output humbucker sound that’s articulate and detailed rather than thick or muddy. It’s the pickup Randy Rhoads relied on in the neck position, and despite the “Jazz” name it covers a wide stylistic range. Compared to a classic SH-1 ’59, the Jazz trades a touch of output for a more refined treble response, staying clear on fast runs and full-bodied without turning harsh once you add gain.
In the bridge sits the SH-5 Duncan Custom, essentially a PAF concept cranked up with a ceramic magnet and custom coil winding. Expect compressed dynamics, punchy low end, and a midrange/high-end attack that cuts through a dense mix without falling apart. It’s a go-to for hard rock, metal, funk, punk, and dropped tunings, holding definition and note separation even when you tune down.
Seymour himself has cited the Jazz neck / Custom bridge combination as one of his favorite pairings — bright, defined highs up top matched with aggressive push and sustain at the bridge. Both pickups ship with four-conductor hookup wire for full coil-splitting and phase-wiring flexibility, so you can dial in series, parallel, or single-coil tones as your rig demands.
