Description
Some humbuckers just fatten up your tone. The Stag Mag does that too, but its real trick is what happens when you split the coils: alnico 2 rod magnets, arranged in a traditional Fender pole stagger, give the split sound genuine Strat character — bouncy, bright, and articulate instead of the thin, weak quack you get from a lot of coil-splits.
That’s down to a coil wind built specifically with splitting in mind, not a stock humbucker wind pressed into service. Run it full-humbucker and you get a smooth, fat, high-output voice; flip it to single-coil mode via a mini-toggle or push-pull pot (made possible by the 4-conductor lead wire) and it snaps into a completely different personality. It’s genuinely two pickups in one housing.
Built by hand at Seymour Duncan’s Santa Barbara factory, the SH-3 pairs its alnico 2 rods with a nickel silver bottom plate and is vacuum wax potted to keep things quiet and squeal-free even at higher gain. For a dual-humbucker setup with serious range, pair it in the bridge with an Alnico II Pro or Pearly Gates in the neck.
