Description
Thirty-plus years in and the JB still hasn’t been dethroned as the go-to hot-rodded humbucker. This is the SH-4 in its reverse zebra finish — same ferocious tone, just with the bobbins flipped for a different look on your bridge pickup. It’s the pickup Seymour Duncan himself reaches for, which tells you something about how well-rounded it really is.
What makes the JB so enduring is that it doesn’t pigeonhole you into one style. Dial back and it cleans up into warm, singing tones with real clarity on top. Dig in and it pushes into aggressive harmonic overtones with plenty of push for lead lines and rhythm crunch alike. Output is high without burying the top end — you still get articulate highs and a controlled, musical balance of sustain and drive rather than a wall of mush.
Stacked up against the SH-14 Custom 5, the JB comes out sharper and more detailed in the treble range. If that edge feels like too much for your rig, swapping to 250K pots is a common fix that smooths things out without losing the pickup’s character.
- Reverse zebra bobbin cover
- Four-conductor hookup cable for wiring flexibility (series, parallel, split coil)
- Recommended for bridge position
Plenty of players pair the JB with a neck pickup for a complete voice across the fretboard — Seymour’s own pick is the SH-2n Jazz for versatility, while the SH-1 ’59 is the go-to if you’re chasing classic P.A.F. warmth.
