Description
Extending true Jazz Bass tone to five strings isn’t as simple as widening a bobbin — Seymour Duncan reworked the coil geometry and winding on the SJ5N-70/74 specifically to handle the wider string spacing and extra low-end demand of extended-range basses. The payoff is that unmistakable J-tone character, from the midrange growl to the softly aggressive attack, now translating cleanly all the way down to a low B that doesn’t turn to mud.
Voiced at vintage output, this neck pickup leans into warmth and playing feel over aggression, giving you that woody, articulate foundation classic Jazz Basses are known for. It’s hand-built in Santa Barbara using hand-ground Alnico 5 rod magnets and Forbon flatwork, then vacuum wax potted to keep things quiet even at higher stage volumes.
- Passive single coil, vintage output, designed for neck position
- Alnico 5 rod magnets, hand-ground
- Forbon flatwork construction
- Vacuum wax potted for squeal-free performance
- Sized for traditional Fender 5-string Jazz Bass covers (black cover included)
- For modern Jazz V models, use the 6770 instead
- Pair with the 7074 bridge pickup for a matched set
If you’ve been chasing genuine ’62 J-tone on a 5-string and coming up short, this is the pickup built to close that gap.
