Suhr’s ML Standard takes the classic 60’s single coil formula and dials up the output, giving you extra sustain and push without losing that glassy top-end shimmer players chase a vintage-voiced neck pickup for. It’s the neck-position half of the ML lineup, tuned for tight low end, a focused midrange that keeps chords from turning to mush, and a smooth sparkle up top that cuts through a mix without getting harsh.
The real trick is in the pole piece staggering. Rather than using the traditional vintage stagger, Suhr modified the pattern to produce a genuinely even magnetic field across all six strings – which matters a lot if your guitar has a flatter fretboard radius or you’re running heavier modern string gauges. No more dead or overpowering strings from poles that were designed for a different era of guitar necks.
