Suhr’s ML Standard reworks the classic 60’s single-coil formula with a modified staggered pole piece layout, designed to keep the magnetic field even across flatter fingerboard radiuses and today’s heavier string sets. The result is a pickup that stays balanced string-to-string instead of favoring the wound or plain strings the way vintage-spec staggers sometimes do.
Tonally, expect tight low end, a focused midrange that keeps chords from getting muddy, and a smooth, non-harsh sparkle on top – the kind of clarity that lets picking dynamics come through clearly. The Standard version is wound hotter than the base ML spec, adding extra output and sustain while keeping the pickup’s articulate character intact, making it a strong choice for players who want single-coil bite with a bit more push.
