The ML Standard is Suhr’s answer to the question of what happens when you take the best-sounding vintage single coils ever measured and push them a little harder. Co-developed with LA session great and solo artist Mike Landau, this set draws on his personal vintage pickup collection — the ones that actually earned their reputation, not just the ones with the right decade stamped on them — to build a modern single coil with more output and sustain than the standard ML, while keeping the tight low end, present mids, and smooth sparkle up top.
Each pickup in the set is individually calibrated for its position, and the middle pickup is reverse-wound/reverse-polarity for hum-cancelling in the 2 and 4 switch positions without sacrificing clarity. A modified staggered pole piece layout evens out the magnetic field across the strings, so the set stays balanced on modern flatter-radius necks and with today’s typical string gauges — no more dead-sounding low E or hot G string.
