Description
John Suhr didn’t build the SSV to compete with modern high-output humbuckers – he built it to escape them. Thirty years of pickup R&D went into recreating the open, uncompressed character of classic humbuckers from a bygone era, and the SSV is the punchier of his two vintage-style designs. Where its sibling the DSV leans smooth on top, the SSV brings more bite and aggression, the kind of honk and snarl that cuts through a mix without ever feeling squashed.
That vintage authenticity comes from a wide sonic aperture – the pickup breathes and responds dynamically to pick attack instead of flattening everything into an even, compressed signal. It’s the difference between a pickup that reacts to how you play and one that just sits there sounding loud.
This particular listing is the bridge-position SSV in a nickel cover, wound to 9K ohms DC resistance with 4-conductor wire for full coil-splitting and phase flexibility. It’s built to Fender-style 53mm pole spacing, so it’s the right call for bolt-on and other non-Gibson-spaced builds.
