Description
The Thornbucker bridge pickup exists because Pete Thorn got tired of humbucker sets that only sounded good through a cranked amp. Switch to the neck or middle position, back off the gain, and most “vintage voiced” humbuckers collapse into mush. Pete knew from playing genuinely great old guitars that this wasn’t a rule—it was a design flaw. So he brought his frustration to Suhr, and together they built a pickup that keeps the touch sensitivity, note separation, and open top end of the best 50’s “patent applied for” units, without the muddiness or the wiring headaches.
This bridge-position Thornbucker comes in 50mm spacing and wears a clean white bobbin cover. Under the hood, Suhr updated the vintage formula with four-conductor wiring, so you get full coil-splitting and phase flexibility that the originals never offered—plus the tight manufacturing tolerances Suhr builds every pickup around, so the one you buy sounds like the one Pete voiced.
Players who split time between humbucker and single-coil guitars will notice the difference fastest: instead of a jarring tonal jump when you switch instruments, the Thornbucker keeps clean and semi-dirty tones articulate and musical, so your amp settings and pedal levels don’t need a full reset mid-gig.
