Description
Most humbuckers force a trade-off: crush into a dirty amp and they’re glorious, but back off the gain or dig into the neck/middle position and everything collapses into mud. That’s the exact frustration guitarist Pete Thorn brought to Suhr, and it’s the problem the Thornbucker set was built to solve.
Rather than chasing a generic “vintage vibe,” Suhr’s team dug into the actual DNA of the most desirable 50’s “patent applied for” pickups — testing magnet types, wire gauges, cover materials, and winding patterns across countless prototypes until they landed on a formula that reproduces that elusive clarity, dynamics, and touch-sensitivity. The goal was simple: a humbucker that stays articulate at low gain and semi-dirty settings, then still delivers real push when you lean into it, so you’re not stuck re-dialing your amp and pedals every time you switch guitars.
This is the bridge unit from that set, wound with plain enamel wire around an Alnico IV magnet for a slightly softer, more vocal push than hotter alnico grades typically offer. Four-conductor wiring is included standard, so you’ve got full flexibility for coil-splitting, series/parallel switching, or any other wiring trick your build calls for.
