The Thornbucker II bridge pickup is Pete Thorn’s refinement of his original Suhr signature design, built around the “hot PAF into a cranked plexi” tones that defined so much classic 70s and 80s guitar playing. It’s the same pickup found in Pete’s Signature Standard HSS, now offered on its own for players chasing that specific flavor of vintage-rooted push.
Suhr took the familiar Thornbucker wind and added a handful of extra turns on the coil, bringing DC resistance up to roughly 9.1kΩ. Paired with an Alnico II magnet instead of the usual choice, the top end shifts toward something warmer and rounder — high notes keep their body and open feel rather than turning harsh or icy under gain. It’s a voicing built to sit comfortably in front of a cranked British-style amp: sweet on top, full through the mids, with enough push to keep pinch harmonics and pick attack articulate without getting brittle.
Wound with plain enamel wire and finished in Zebra, this 50mm-spaced bridge unit retains the clarity and warmth that made the original Thornbucker popular, while adding a more powerful, full-spectrum body underneath.
