The Thornbucker II is Pete Thorn’s refined take on his own signature Suhr pickup, built around the idea that a hot PAF slamming into a cranked plexi is still one of the most satisfying tones in rock guitar. This bridge model pushes the original Thornbucker wind further, adding extra coil turns for a hotter output up near 9k, then pairs that with an Alnico II magnet instead of the usual Alnico V.
That magnet swap is the real story here. Alnico II has a softer, more compressed magnetic pull than Alnico V, which translates into a top-end that’s rounder and warmer rather than glassy or brittle. Combined with the increased wind, you get a pickup that stays clear and articulate at high gain but never turns harsh or ice-picky on the top strings. Single notes carry more body and openness, chords stay full-spectrum, and the whole thing leans naturally into British-flavored crunch and lead tones without needing extra EQ tricks.
