Description
Pete Thorn’s frustration became Suhr’s obsession: why do so many humbucker-loaded guitars turn to mush the moment you back off the gain or dig into the neck pickup? The Thornbucker is Suhr’s answer, a pickup engineered from the ground up to deliver the touch-sensitivity, note separation, and vintage character of the best 50s-era “patent applied for” units, but built to modern standards of consistency.
Getting there wasn’t a shortcut job. Suhr worked through countless combinations of magnet, wire, wind, and cover before landing on a formula that finally nailed the elusive vintage feel players chase but rarely find. The goal was simple in theory, hard in practice: a humbucker that stays articulate and musical clean or dirty, so you’re not stuck fighting your amp settings every time you switch pickups or guitars mid-set.
This neck-position Thornbucker wears a raw nickel cover and is wound with plain enamel wire around an Alnico V magnet, landing at 7.3K DC resistance. Four-conductor hookup wire gives you the flexibility for coil-splitting and other wiring tricks beyond standard humbucker operation.
