Van Zandt pickups come from the hands of J.D. Van Zandt, whose family’s work rewinding and rebuilding pickups around the Dallas/Ft. Worth area stretches back to the early 1960s. What started as favors for fellow players and repair shops turned into a reputation built entirely on word of mouth – and that same old-school, by-hand approach is still how these pickups are made today.
This neck pickup is voiced to land squarely in 50s and early 60s J Bass territory: mellow, round, and a little dark on its own. That’s by design. Paired with the bridge pickup and blended toward the center, it fills out with the low end this neck coil provides while the bridge unit adds the top-end snap, giving you the classic scooped-yet-punchy two-pickup Jazz Bass voice.
