Before Van Zandt was a pickup company, it was just W.L. “J.D.” Van Zandt fixing magnets for fellow Dallas/Ft. Worth pickers back in the 1960s. A machinist by trade and a country guitarist since the ’50s, he started rewinding pickups as favors, and word of mouth turned that side hustle into a shop with a serious following among tone purists.
This vintage-style Jazz Bass set carries that same old-world approach into a matched neck/bridge pair, hand built to conjure the sound of the instrument’s golden era. The neck pickup sits mellow and rounded, while the bridge unit brings the bite. Blend them together in the center position and you get the classic push-pull of deep low end anchored underneath articulate top end — the exact combination that made Jazz Basses a studio staple.
