This set pairs two very different DiMarzio philosophies in one box: a painstaking recreation of vintage PAF magic for the neck, and one of the company’s most flexible modern bridge humbuckers to balance it out.
The PAF 36th Anniversary Neck wasn’t built from a spec sheet — DiMarzio reverse-engineered it using Larry DiMarzio’s own ’59 Les Paul as the benchmark, chasing that guitar’s oddly single-coil-like clarity despite its weak magnetic field. To get there, they deliberately weakened the magnetic pull so strings ring out longer, then wound 42-gauge custom-coated wire on computer-controlled winders for a precisely tuned frequency response, dipped to kill squeal and microphonics. The nickel-silver cover is plated to stay magnetically transparent, so nothing chokes the signal. Result: smooth, articulate, never muddy, and just as happy driven into the bridge position as it is up front.

On the bridge, the Norton (F-spaced) lands tonally between FRED and The Tone Zone — borrowing FRED’s snarling harmonic edge and The Tone Zone’s mid-heavy muscle, without tipping into full distortion-humbucker territory. It uses the same dual-resonance design as those two pickups, giving you more push than a vintage-style bridge but with real dynamic range still intact. It’s arguably DiMarzio’s most adaptable bridge pickup, playing well with neck partners from the Air Classic to the PAF Pro — and here, it’s matched with the 36th Anniversary Neck for a set that covers clean sparkle through pushed rock crunch.
