Description
DiMarzio spent over a decade chasing a very specific memory: the steely-yet-woody tone that came out of a handful of early ’60s single coils, minus the 60-cycle hum that’s plagued those designs since day one. The Area 61 is the payoff — a hum-canceling single coil built to nail that Texas blues tonal foundation without asking you to switch to heavier strings or toughen up your picking hand.
What makes it interesting is how it behaves under different attack. Dig in and it pushes back louder and tougher than a vintage-style pickup should, but ease off the pick or pull back the volume knob and it cleans up almost instantly — that dynamic window is a big part of what people mean when they talk about “Texas blues” tone. It holds its own in all three switch positions, and it’s a natural bridge-position partner to a pair of Area 58 pickups if you want a guitar that covers everything from Nashville twang to Texas grit.
Like its Area 58 sibling, the Area 61 cancels hum more effectively than most full-size humbuckers, so you get the vintage single-coil character without the noise floor that usually comes with it.
