Description
1967 was the year single-coils peaked in tone and bottomed out in patience — bright, glassy, and absolutely riddled with hum. DiMarzio’s Area 67 rebuilds that Monterey-era chime from the ground up, keeping the sparkle players chased in the late ’60s while erasing the noise problem with their patented Area humbucking design. Plug in and the character is instantly familiar: airy top end, that classic quack in the 2 and 4 positions, and none of the 60-cycle buzz you’d get from a vintage-style single coil.
The trick lies in the magnet. Original late-’60s Strat® pickups leaned on full-power Alnico 5, which sounds great but grabs the strings hard enough to choke sustain and mess with intonation, especially out at the neck and middle. Because the Area 67’s magnetic field is engineered to be more focused and efficient than a traditional single coil’s, DiMarzio dropped in Alnico 2 instead — cutting magnetic pull by roughly 40% without sacrificing output. The payoff is longer sustain, more accurate pitch, and a bridge tone that stays bright without tipping into ice-pick territory.
Built for players who want the vintage snap without the vintage compromises — hum, pull, and all.
