Description
Born from Eric Johnson’s quest to make his Les Paul reissue sing like a vintage Gretsch Country Gentleman, the DP211 EJ Custom neck pickup is a full-size humbucker with a personality all its own. On paper the DC resistance sits right in PAF territory, but plug it in and you’ll hear something else entirely: a brighter, more articulate voice that trades some of the vintage humbucker’s power for treble response closer to a single-coil.
That doesn’t mean it’s thin. The bass end stays firm and grounded, so chords ring with definition instead of mush, and fingerpicked passages come through clean and separated. Push it into heavy distortion and the EJ Custom holds its shape — notes stay articulate and the low end refuses to turn to sludge, which is exactly why Eric found it surprised him under high-gain conditions.
Built as a direct replacement for standard full-size humbuckers, it drops into any solid-body, semi-hollow, or hollow-body guitar without routing modifications. This nickel-covered version keeps the classic humbucker look while retaining the pickup’s signature clarity — exposed-coil versions in DiMarzio’s standard colors are also available.
