Description
FRED® started life as a simple mid-range tweak on the PAF Pro®, but the experiment didn’t stay simple. Once DiMarzio pushed that midrange forward, harmonics that humbuckers typically bury or ignore suddenly came alive — especially once you shove an overdriven amp or a distortion pedal in front of it. The output stayed close to PAF Pro® territory, so this isn’t a hot-rodded gain monster; it’s the same ballpark power with a completely different set of overtones layered on top.
That’s really the appeal here: FRED® doesn’t chase compression or saturation the way high-output pickups do. Instead it opens up a crankier, growlier voice that responds to pick attack and amp drive in ways a standard humbucker won’t. Riffs get more bite, leads get more snarl, and the extra harmonic content gives distorted tones a rawer, more vocal quality without turning muddy.
This version is built in F-spaced format with black covers, so it’s aimed at guitars with F-spaced bridge routing — worth double-checking your bridge spacing before you order, since fit matters more than most players expect with F-spaced pickups.
- Humbucker voiced with boosted midrange and unusual harmonic overtones
- Output level comparable to DiMarzio PAF Pro®
- Especially expressive through overdriven amps and distortion pedals
- F-spaced pole configuration
- Black cover finish
If your current bridge humbucker sounds fine but flat once the gain comes up, FRED® is the kind of pickup that adds character back into an overdriven tone without just making things louder.
