Satriani ran FRED as his bridge pickup for years, but by 2005 he wanted more muscle to keep up with a beefier signature amp and heavier strings. DiMarzio’s answer was the Mo’Joe: same DNA, more output, and none of the mushiness that usually comes with cranking a design past its comfort zone.
The trick isn’t just winding it hotter. DiMarzio widened the gap between the center frequencies the coils are tuned to, rather than just piling on DC resistance. That keeps note-to-note separation intact even when you’re playing dense chords or fast legato runs, so the pickup stays articulate instead of turning into a wall of compression. All the harmonic snap that made FRED a favorite is still there, ready to jump out under a pick attack — it’s just got more shove behind it now.
That extra output makes Mo’Joe a natural partner for a PAF Joe in the neck, giving you a rhythm-to-lead pairing with real headroom between the two voices instead of two pickups fighting for the same sonic space.
