Description
This set pairs two of DiMarzio’s most respected humbuckers for players chasing that elusive vintage magic without the vintage inconsistency. Both come in black, both wired 4-conductor, and both ship with a free set of D’Addario NYXL1046 Regular Light strings to get you playing right away.
PAF 36th Anniversary (Neck)
Larry DiMarzio used his own ’59 cherry sunburst Les Paul as the benchmark when re-engineering this pickup u2014 not to clone it, but to understand why great PAFs behave the way they do. The answer was a deliberately weak magnetic field: it lets strings ring out longer and gives the pickup an almost single-coil-like clarity and definition, while pick attack alone can push it from clean into breakup. Computer-controlled winders lay down 42-gauge custom-coated wire for consistent frequency response, and a custom dip treatment kills squeal and microphonics. The nickel-silver cover uses a new plating that’s more magnetically transparent than vintage examples. Smooth without going muddy, it holds up whether you run it in the neck or bridge position.
- Wiring: 4-Conductor (1-Conductor optional)
- Magnet: Alnico 5
- Output: 250mV
- DC Resistance: 7.31 kOhm
Norton (Bridge, F-Spaced)
Sitting tonally between FRED and The Tone Zone, the Norton borrows FRED’s snarling harmonic edge and blends it with the midrange muscle of the Tone Zone. Built on the same dual-resonance design as those two pickups, it delivers more output and size than a vintage-style humbucker without tipping into full distortion-pickup territory u2014 arguably DiMarzio’s most adaptable bridge unit, at home next to the Air Classic, PAF 36th Anniversary, PAF Pro, or Air Norton.
- Wiring: 4-Conductor
- Magnet: Alnico 5
- Output: 352mV
- DC Resistance: 12.62 kOhm
