Description
This is a neck/bridge pairing built around contrast that actually works together. The DP103BK PAF 36th Anniversary Neck humbucker was DiMarzio’s attempt to reverse-engineer what made Larry DiMarzio’s own ’59 Les Paul so special — not just cloning the original PAF, but rebuilding it around a deliberately weaker magnetic field so strings ring out longer and the attack stays articulate. Alnico 5 magnet, 4-conductor wiring (1-conductor optional), 250mV output, 7.31k DC resistance. Nickel-silver cover, wound on computer-controlled winders with 42-gauge wire, wax-dipped to kill squeal. It’s smooth without going mushy, and works just as happily in the bridge as it does here in the neck.
On the other end sits the DP160FBK Norton, an F-spaced bridge humbucker that splits the difference between FRED and The Tone Zone — some of FRED’s snarly harmonic bite, blended with more midrange muscle borrowed from the Tone Zone’s dual-resonance design. Alnico 5 magnet, 4-conductor wiring, 352mV output, 12.62k DC resistance. It runs hotter and bigger than any vintage-style pickup but stops short of full distortion-class territory, which is exactly why DiMarzio calls it one of their most flexible bridge options — it plays well with all kinds of neck pickups, this PAF 36th included.
