Steve Lukather didn’t build his reputation on a single sound. As a founding member of Toto and one of the most in-demand session players around, he moves from slippery blues phrasing to jazz-informed “outside” lines to full-throttle rock leads, often within the same solo, all tied together by that instantly recognizable, heavy vibrato. The EMG SL20 is his answer to needing one guitar that covers all of it.
This set pairs two Alnico V loaded SLV single coils with an 85 humbucker in the bridge, wired to a single master volume and tone control. It’s a simple layout on purpose — Lukather doesn’t need a wall of switches to get from a clean jazz tone to a saturated rock crunch, and neither will you. Everything arrives pre-mounted on a custom 11-hole black pearloid pickguard with matching black knobs.
Because it’s built on EMG’s Solderless Install System, this isn’t a kit that needs an afternoon with a soldering iron and a wiring diagram. The pickguard shows up fully assembled and wired to spec, so mounting it to your guitar and connecting the battery and output jack is essentially the whole job.
