Description
The SH-15 Alternative 8 marks a milestone for Seymour Duncan: it was their first production humbucker to pair overwound coils with an Alnico 8 bar magnet instead of the more common Alnico 5 or ceramic options. The result is a bridge pickup that hits hard, but stays musical while doing it.
- Alnico 8 bar magnet – punchier and hotter than Alnico 5, without the harsh top-end of ceramic magnets
- Hot-wound coils for serious output, at 17.68k DC resistance
- Thick, aggressive mids with articulate upper-mid presence
- Stays dynamic and touch-responsive instead of going dark or sizzly under high gain
That Alnico 8 magnet is really the heart of this pickup’s personality. It pushes output well beyond a typical vintage-flavored humbucker, giving you the low-end weight and midrange shove that rock and high-gain playing demand, but it retains the pick-attack clarity and note definition that keep hot ceramic pickups from ever feeling as toneful.
Built for the bridge position, the SH-15 plays especially well with a moderate-output neck pickup for contrast – Duncan’s own SH-1n ’59 or SH-2n Jazz Model are natural partners. It’s a strong fit for guitars already leaning warm and balanced, including those with rosewood fingerboards, where the Alternative 8’s extra push and mid presence fill things out nicely without muddying up.
Whether you’re chasing thick rhythm tones or a lead sound that cuts without turning brittle, the Alternative 8 gives high-gain rock players a genuinely versatile weapon in the bridge slot.
