Description
If you’ve ever asked another guitarist what’s in their bridge and neck slots, chances are good this exact pairing came up. The Hot Rodded set puts the SH-4 JB in the bridge and the SH-2N Jazz Model in the neck – two pickups Duncan designed decades ago to work as a team, and one that’s remained a go-to recommendation ever since.
The JB (SH-4) is built around an alnico 5 bar magnet and hotter-than-vintage coils, giving you punchy upper-mids, a low end that stays tight instead of getting flabby, and highs with enough harmonic content to cut through a mix. It’s equally at home snarling through hard rock and metal or cleaning up nicely for blues and country – which is a big part of why it’s stayed Duncan’s best-selling pickup for close to 40 years.
The Jazz Model (SH-2N) shares the alnico 5 magnet but gets a different coil wind aimed at clarity rather than output. Expect a glassy, articulate top end, a scooped midrange, and low end that’s full without turning to mud. Originally voiced specifically to complement the JB, it’s also flexible enough to pair with most moderate-to-hot bridge humbuckers – and it’s been the neck pickup of choice for players ranging from Randy Rhoads to Jeff Beck.
Both pickups are hand-built in Santa Barbara with:
- Alnico 5 bar magnets
- Nickel silver bottom plates
- 4-conductor lead wire for coil-splitting, series/parallel, and other wiring options
- Vacuum wax potting for squeal-free performance
Finish: white on both pickups.
