John Suhr didn’t just chase a vintage single-coil sound with the ML set—he went straight to the source, working alongside LA session great Michael Landau to pin down exactly what makes certain old-school pickups special. Not every vintage single-coil is a keeper, and Suhr used the standout pieces from Mike’s own collection as the benchmark for this design.
The result is a set that gives you the shimmer and top-end detail players chase in vintage-style pickups, backed by low end that’s tighter and more substantial than most originals ever managed. Dig into a fat, blistering lead and the ML holds together; back off into clean rhythm work and it opens up with real sparkle and clarity. It’s a set built to move fluidly between both extremes rather than forcing a compromise.
Each pickup in the set is calibrated specifically for its position—bridge, middle, and neck are not interchangeable, and the middle pickup uses reverse winding and reverse polarity for authentic hum-cancelling in positions 2 and 4.
