Description
The Thornbucker exists because Pete Thorn got tired of humbucker sets that only came alive under distortion. Flip to the clean channel or back off your gain, and most modern ‘buckers turn to mush — especially away from the bridge. Pete knew vintage PAF-era pickups didn’t have this problem, so he brought the challenge to Suhr: build something with that same openness, dynamic touch, and tonal personality, minus the inconsistency that plagued so many old and boutique units.
Suhr’s answer came after extensive prototyping across magnets, wire gauges, winding patterns, and covers, chasing the specific magic of the best 50’s ‘patent applied for’ pickups rather than just imitating their spec sheet. The result is a bridge humbucker that stays articulate at low volumes, breathes with your pick attack, and still delivers the push you want when you dig in — without forcing you to relearn your amp settings every time you switch guitars.
This 50mm-spaced bridge unit features an Alnico IV magnet for a slightly softer, more vintage-leaning pull than Alnico V, paired with plain enamel wire and a DC resistance around 8.4KΩ. Four-conductor wiring is included as standard, giving you the flexibility to run coil-splitting, series/parallel, or other custom wiring schemes beyond simple humbucker output. This listing is finished in a Raw Nickel cover, though Suhr also offers Black, White, Parchment, Zebra, and Reversed Zebra options if you want to match a different aesthetic.
