Description
The PH1- takes everything great about a soapbar P90 and dials it in specifically for the neck position, where you want clarity without losing warmth. It’s built into a humbucker-sized housing under a nickel cover, so it drops right into any humbucker-routed guitar without routing surgery.
Soapbar pickups have always occupied that sweet spot between a thin single coil and a dense, focused humbucker—and the PH1- leans into that middle ground. You get the wide-open bandwidth single coils are known for: tight low end and stringy, articulate top end. But Tom Anderson smooths the very top of that response just enough to kill any glassy harshness, leaving pure string definition instead. Underneath, there’s real low-end authority and just enough midrange body to keep things from sounding thin, without tipping over into the compressed, mid-forward character of a standard humbucker.
Output-wise, it’s a happy medium—not a low-output wallflower, not a scorched-earth hot pickup. Push it through a cranked amp and it breaks up with grit and character; back off the volume and it cleans up beautifully, staying articulate and detailed. And because it’s wired as a humbucker, you get all of that classic soapbar magic completely free of 60-cycle hum.
